45 Years of Helping People Recover

Jan 27, 2025Blog

In 1980, Mr. Willis Hudson Sr. and other dedicated community partners opened the Friends of the Hudson Center, the first treatment program of its kind on the Eastern Shore. What started as a small program focused on treating alcoholism in men has grown into a cornerstone of hope and healing for those facing addiction and mental health challenges. This year, as Hudson celebrates its 45th anniversary, we reflect on its incredible evolution and look forward to its exciting future.

When Hudson first opened its doors, its primary focus was on providing support for alcoholism—a pressing issue of the time. Over the decades, however, the organization has adapted to meet the changing landscape of addiction. As the opioid crisis surged and other substance use disorders became more prevalent, Hudson expanded its services to address these challenges, ensuring it remained a lifeline for those in need.

Hudson’s growth hasn’t stopped with addiction treatment. Recognizing the critical link between mental health and addiction, the organization integrated mental health services into its offerings. Many individuals with substance use disorders also face co-occurring mental health conditions, and Hudson’s holistic approach ensures both aspects are addressed.

Over 45 years, Hudson’s physical footprint has grown significantly, reflecting its commitment to providing accessible, high-quality care. The organization now operates an inpatient campus along with six treatment houses in Salisbury, Maryland, and two recovery houses in Delaware. These facilities serve as safe havens for individuals taking the courageous steps toward recovery.

As Hudson Behavioral Health moves into its 45th year and beyond, the future looks brighter than ever. In 2025, the organization is set to open a new outpatient center, completing its spectrum of addiction treatment services. This center will provide individuals with the flexibility and support they need to continue their recovery journey while balancing the demands of everyday life.

Additionally, Hudson will be relocating one of its Delaware recovery houses to a newly remodeled home, offering an upgraded space for residents to rebuild their lives. These initiatives underscore Hudson’s unwavering commitment to innovation and growth in service of its mission.

“As we celebrate 45 years of service, I am humbled by how far Hudson Behavioral Health has come,” said Leslie Brown, CEO of Hudson. “What began as a small effort to address alcoholism has grown into a comprehensive organization that supports individuals through every stage of their recovery journey. Looking ahead to 2025, we are thrilled to be opening a new outpatient center, ensuring we can continue to meet the needs of our community. This milestone is a testament to the hard work of our team, the trust of those we serve, and the support of our partners. Together, we’re building a brighter future for recovery.”

Here’s to 45 years of hope, healing, and a path to recovery for all who walk through Hudson’s doors.
